The course starts off with an overview that explains the benefits to earning the PMP certification and describes the PMP exam. This unit offers an excellent printable description of exam details. It explains the percentage of questions on each of the five project management processes. Another worksheet provides the names of 3 terms that have changed in the 2000 version of the test.
Some of the exam tips offered in this introductory unit are fairly detailed. For example, the course suggests you calculate the average amount of time you can spend on a question by dividing the time available by the number of questions. The rest of the course includes a unit devoted to review questions on each of the nine PM body of knowledge areas. These include: integration management, scope management, time managfement, cost management, quality management, human resources management, communications management, risk management, and procurement management. The units' questions fully cover the 9 knowledge areas and 5 project management processes. The course serves as a powerful review aid. In addition, PrimeLearning.com® provides links to half of a dozen project management Web sites that offer publications, discussion groups, and more. Other resources are links to 10 articles and a list of a dozen recent books. The topics range from focusing on individual skills, like leading meetings, to guides covering the whole project management process. |

This course uses a slide show format with a handy toolbar. The course design includes optional audio and a linked glossary. Most of the delivery elements of this course excellently support its test preparation focus. For example, the style and number of questions match the format of the exam.
The format of the questions also maximize your learning. Every answer option includes a lengthy explanation of why the correct option is the best and the other options are wrong. In addition, the course has a great feature that automatically reshuffles the answer choices if you retake a question. The course also offers a 45 question self-check quiz that can be taken as a post-test or at any time. Only the self-check can be scored. There are two drawbacks to the course delivery. First, the scroll bar on the course menu sometimes doesn't work. As a result, only the four visible units can be selected. After finishing each unit the course automatically starts the next unit. Thus, it is possible to access the other 6 units if you take all the units in a row. However, if you take a break from this lengthy course, you would have to retake it to get to the point where you left off. A more minor problem is that each unit can only be navigated a page forward or backward at a time. There is no way to jump or skip around within a unit. If you want to review a particular question in a long unit, that can get annoying. PrimeLearning's courses offer a broad range of interactions with instructors and other students. The course offers access to a mentor, discussion group, a chat room, and periodic eLearning events. eLearning events are a series of synchronous e-conferences with featured speakers on related topics. |
