Closing a Project

Course Description

"Closing a Project" is the final course of three in the PrimeLearning.com® series, "Project Implementation." This course explains how to close a project via channels internal to your organization. It also describes how to end contractual obligations with contractors who are outside your organization.

This course explains how to:

  • Identify the 5 steps in administrative closure.
  • Identify the 4 steps in contract closure.

The course presents its material as a text-based slide show. It offers quiz questions, a self-check, two brief audio dialogues, and links to related articles and Web sites. In addition, the course offers access to a mentor, a discussion group, a chat room, and periodic eLearning events.

Content
"Closing a Project" explains simple, systematic methods for closing out a project. For example, the course provides a methodical series of steps for documenting project results and formally acknowledging completion. The course also explains fully the negative consequences of not completing each step. For example, if the product isnít fully documented, other teams may have to reinvent the wheel.

The course clearly defines and effectively illustrates the topics. Each unit uses an ongoing scenario that helps maintain interest. The course gives an appropriate example for each step or task. For example, the course points out the different departments that should sign-off on Brianís inventory software project before the contractor is paid.

The course offers a sample project review questionnaire that team members fill out to document the lessons learned during a project. This can serve as a concrete model to help you draft your own survey. The course also provides very basic printable worksheets that outline the steps covered in each unit. These worksheets could be useful as abbreviated how-to manuals.

PrimeLearning.com® offers links to half of a dozen project management Web sites that offer publications, discussion groups, and more. Other resources are links to 10 articles and a list of a dozen recent books. The topics range from focusing on individual skills, like leading meetings, to guides covering the whole project management process.

Platform
PrimeLearning.com® uses a slide show format to present this course. It is easy to navigate. The course offers a handy toolbar at the bottom of the page and a list of resources to the left. The course design includes optional audio and a linked glossary.

This course uses a moderate level of interactivity. It offers basic features like frequent mouse-overs and a couple brief audio dialogues. These liven up the slide show delivery. Quiz questions also provide a few chances to review and apply the material. Adding some scenario-based questions would provide even more opportunities to put the concepts into practice.

PrimeLearning.com® offers a pre-assessment for their entire "PrimeProject Management Fundamentals" curriculum that determines which courses you need to take--there isn't an individual pre-assessment for just this course. This course does, however, offer a brief self-check quiz that can be taken as a post-test or at any time.

PrimeLearning's courses offer a broad range of interactions with instructors and other students. For example, the course encourages you to contact a mentor about how to plan your work in the curriculum or for any specific questions. In addition, the course offers access to a discussion group, a chat room, and periodic eLearning events. eLearning events are a series of synchronous e-conferences with featured speakers on related topics. The community members for these interactive resources are all users of the "PrimeProject Management Fundamentals" curriculum.

Value
"Closing a Project" provides concrete, methodical steps to follow in order to document a project and settle any contracts. The course illustrates this clear, practical content with frequent examples. In addition, the use of basic interactive features keeps the course engaging. This course is a good value, and its brevity makes it a good choice for busy managers.
